Newcastle put on a spectacular display against Tottenham, scoring five goals in the first half alone to secure a 6-1 victory and extend their lead over the fifth-placed Spurs by six points.

Jacob Murphy’s expression of shock and joy perfectly captured the electric atmosphere at St. James’ Park.

The goals began pouring in for Newcastle almost immediately, with Murphy and Joelinton both finding the back of the net in the opening minutes of the game. Tottenham’s manager, Cristian Stellini, was forced to abandon his preferred three centre-back system and try something new, but the hodgepodge group of defenders he put together proved inadequate against Newcastle’s relentless attack.

The game was all but over before the halftime whistle even blew, with Newcastle securing an almost insurmountable lead. While Tottenham did manage to score a consolation goal early in the second half, it was too little too late. Callum Wilson came off the bench to score Newcastle’s sixth and final goal of the match, putting an exclamation point on their dominant performance.

Newcastle displayed all the qualities that Tottenham lacked on the day: they were vibrant, organised, and efficient. If they can maintain this level of play throughout the season, they may very well find themselves qualifying for the Champions League come May.
